Late last night, Tom and I arrived back in L.A. after a week in Abaco. Witnessing the destruction wrought by Dorian was heartbreaking. Even having seen it first hand, I have trouble believing it’s real.
Some of you may know that Tom’s a foreign correspondent for Canada’s CTV National News. When he took a week off work so that we could get to Green Turtle Cay and check on Fish Hooks, he planned to shoot some video for me to use here on the blog.
In the end, however, the journalist in him took over, and he put together the following news story, which aired nationally in Canada this past Tuesday.
Though much of the world’s media has moved on to other stories, Tom’s piece shows that the need in the northern Bahamas is far from over. In Marsh Harbour, for various reasons, recovery has yet to really begin.
That Marsh Harbour will recover, I have no doubt. (Anyone who tells you otherwise does not know Abaco or Abaconians!) But it’s going to take a lot of time and a lot of support from the Bahamian government, from domestic and foreign NGOs and from individual donors.
In the coming days, I’ll write more about the initiatives being implemented to help Marsh Harbour and the rest of Abaco (and Grand Bahama) rebuild, and I’ll share more about our experiences in Abaco over the past week.

Tom,Thankyou for that report,my wife and I are in Va.I go back to Hopetown on wed.its the same landscape there as in GTC .We lost our house the store is damaged ,but life must go on.
Vernon, Anita and I have been wondering how you folks fared. We are glad to hear you are both safe in VA but sorry for your losses. We have many happy memories of going to the store and getting fresh bread and eating it on the spot while it was still warm. We are trying to keep in touch with the lastest news from different family members and Mandy’s posts sure do help. We pray daily for all the family on (or now from) the islands. Reality report two months AFTER hurricane Dorian sat and smashed Abaco’s business hub and homes. Thank you. Did the Bahamas Prime Minister visit Marsh Harbour yesterday to assess and address the major need?

Wao. They say, who feels it knows it. I personally survived both the Irma & Maria apocalypse in September 2017 in the US Virgin Islands.
Trust me they were no category 5 hurricanes, they were above 6’s for sure with winds over 250 miles per hour.
If you study the kinds of devastation left behind after Irma, Maria, Michael & Dorian, you will realize the latter two were worse. Dorian being the most powerful. To me hurricane Dorian was a category 7. A concrete house or building is no longer safe anymore. May God bless all the peoples of the Bahamas!
