What’s International Potcake Day?
Founded in 2014 by Abaco’s own Chamara Parotti, animal lover and vet assistant extraordinaire, International Potcake Day was created to draw attention to the plight of Bahamian potcakes and stray dogs worldwide.
Have you adopted a Bahamian potcake? If so, please share your potcake adoption story on social media, using the hashtag #InternationalPotcakeDay.
No potcake? No worries! Chamara encourages you to commemorate International Potcake Day by donating to an animal shelter and using social media to encourage others to do the same. Again, please use the hashtag #InternationalPotcakeDay.
If you’re looking for a shelter to support, please consider contributing to the Abaco Shelter, the only sanctuary for stray and abandoned dogs in Abaco, Bahamas. The Abaco Shelter provides a safe home and essential veterinary care for stray dogs, offers spay and neuter services to reduce the stray population, and facilitates adoptions.
Funded only through public donations and operated 100% by volunteers, the facility rescues and cares for dozens of dogs each year.

WAYS TO HELP THE ABACO SHELTER
- Donate! Abaco Shelter relies 100% on public donations to fund their ongoing activities. Contributions of any size are greatly appreciated.
- Volunteer – if you’re around Abaco, consider volunteering a few hours a week to help at the shelter. Learn more by emailing abacoshelter@gmail.com.
- Adopt – Potcakes are lovely, sweet and incredibly smart dogs. If you’ve got room in your family for an Abaco potcake, download an adoption application and email the completed form to abacoshelter@gmail.com.
- Help transport an Abaco Shelter dog to its foster family or new furever home. If you’re flying from Abaco to the U.S. or Canada — by commercial or private plane — and can carry one or more dogs with you, contact the shelter at abacoshelter@gmail.com
