The Other Shore
That’s one name for this part of the island. But not the name given to it by New Yorkers…
Did they call it Black Sound?

No. Black Sound is close, though… If I turned around from taking this photo and walked about 25 steps, I’d be facing Black Sound…
BROOKLYN…..
And we have a winner! Brooklyn is right.
Broocklyn
Correct!
Oddly enough, the western shore of Hope Town Harbour, across from the village, is [was] also known as Brooklyn. I have no idea why, and that bit of trivia has almost been forgotten.
Hi, Reggie. I didn’t realize that. Maybe the New Yorkers visited there as well…? Vertrum Lowe told me the folks from New York nicknamed the far side of Settlement Creek “Brooklyn”, because they looked across at it similar to the way they looked across at Brooklyn from Manhattan back at home. The same would be true of the western shore of HT harbour, so I wonder if there’s a connection there…?
